The Academit Tel Aviv-Yafo is the only academic institution in Israel currently offering a curriculum in Medical Psychology.
Master's degree in medical psychology emphasize on understanding the linkage and connection between physiological factors and the psychological and social factors involved in developing different phenomena and physical disease. The curriculum discusses means and methods for addressing and handling the conditions as well as prevention and coping strategies, in both adult medical psychology as well as in child medical psychology.
Studying medical psychology enables students to integrate in the healthcare system and treat patients diagnosed with physical conditions while admitted to hospital or in outpatient settings.
The program has three main components:
- Clinical knowledge and competences in psychopathology, psychodiagnostics, and psychotherapy.
- Knowledge and familiarity with theory, models, and different therapeutic approaches in medical psychology.
- Basic courses in physiology, anatomy, and neuronal systems.
The above mentioned components are the pedagogical infrastructure to more advanced courses such as psychopharmacology and, physiological and psychological aspects of illness and disease. The program offers additional courses as ethics, medical sociology, and seminars to complement and complete graduates' training as healthcare system psychologists.
The program in medical psychology comprises 60 credits including compulsory courses and seminars. In addition students are required to participate in a practicum and submit a dissertation.
