Happy Holidays

|

Dear Friends of MTA,

In this newsletter, we bring to you MTA president's address by Prof. Shlomo Biderman, who speaks to the role of academia in producing new knowledge for the 21st century. Nowhere is this vision more apparent than at the Entrepreneurship Center, where students turn innovative ideas into social impact ventures, marrying business models with social justice principles.

Passover is The Holiday of Spring, marking the circular change of seasons, as well as The Holiday of Freedom. This includes the freedom of thought: the freedom to think critically and to express one's opinion, as well as the freedom to pursue one's academic interests and to broaden one's intellectual horizons. In other words, freedom entails both critique and innovation — the foundations of academia. It is our duty as an academic institution to provide our society with tools for critical and innovative thinking and action. Read Prof. Biderman's Presidential Address.

Entrepreneurship at MTA

In this newsletter we highlight three exemplary businesses and projects that emerged from the Social Entrepreneurship Incubator at MTA:

TeachTech is a social business bridging socio-economic technological gaps by helping communities drive their own growth. Together with the Tel Aviv Jaffa Municipality and Cisco, TeachTech offers residents of southern Tel-Aviv-Jaffa technological courses and training them to pass the knowledge on and increase the community's capacity to drive its own growth.

The Ariel project is a social business of therapeutic gardening for children and youth at risk. Guided by professional therapists, students create and nurture garden in their school, and even instruct their peers in gardening and build gardens for people in need. Thus they go through a personal transformation and also become contributing members of the community.

The Safe Surf project addresses the burning problem of cyberbullying - online violence - which victimizes more and more students every day, leaving teachers and parents helpless. The project helps school communities find effective tools for building an ethical code of virtual conduct and making their members committed and accountable to it.

In driving this mushrooming field of 'Impact Entrepreneurship', MTA is leading, by action, the model of an academia advancing new knowledge for the 21st century. Join us on this mission - we welcome new partnerships and value your contribution. Contact us today.

We wish you Happy Holidays, and to never stop pursuing freedom of all kinds.
