קיבל את הדוקטורט שלו מאוניברסיטת תל־אביב בשנת 2005. משנה זו הוא חבר סגל בבית הספר למדעי ההתנהגות, ומשנת 2011 הוא חבר סגל בכיר.
תחום מחקרו העיקרי הוא המעבר להורות, הוא חוקר כיצד משתני רקע אישותיים משפיעים על התפתחות מצבים נפשיים לאחר הלידה, כמו דיכאון וטראומה, ואת הקשר שבין הורה-תינוק או הורה-ילד.
פרופ' יונתן הנדלזלץ הוא חבר אורח במחלקה לפסיכיאטריה באוניברסיטת מישיגן שבארצות הברית וחבר מערכת בכתבי העת בתחום מחקרו. הוא פסיכולוג קליני, מטפל במתבגרות, במתבגרים ובמבוגרים ומדריך סטודנטיות, סטודנטים, מתמחות ומתמחים.
מעבר להורות- כיצד משתני רקע אישותיים משפיעים על התפתחות מצבים נפשיים לאחר הלידה (בעיקר דיכאון וטראומה) והקשר הורה-תינוק/ילד.
