    את ראשית דרכה האקדמית עשתה נורית באוניברסיטה העברית, שם כתבה דוקטורט בהנחייתה של פרופ' נעמי חזן, שעסק בחברה אזרחית בניגריה בתקופת המשטר הצבאי. בהמשך התמקדו עיסוקיה המגוונים, האקדמיים ואלו שמחוץ לעולם האקדמי, בחברה האזרחית ובהתארגנות מקומית, שמטרתה להגן על זכויות האדם והסביבה.

    מחקריה הנוכחיים עוסקים בשאלות של קיימות ופוליטיקה, הן מדגישות את המתחים החברתיים והפוליטיים שמתעוררים בשל קידום יעדי הקיימות העולמיים (בצפון קניה), את השלכות הקורונה על אוכלוסיות באזורים צחיחים בעולם (בעיקר אוכלוסיות פסטורליות ונשים), ואיך אפשר לקיים מודל כלכלי מקיים בהשכלה הגבוהה.

    במהלך השנים האחרונות השתתפה ד"ר השמשוני יפה בפעילות המעודדת שיתופי פעולה במחקר ובפיתוח המרחב במחקר האירופי, בקבוצת מחקר באוניברסיטת ביירות שבגרמניה, הייתה חברה בפרויקט IFI וזכתה במענק של קרן רוטשילד למחקר שפיתח מודלים כלכליים-חברתיים בהשכלה הגבוהה.
